1084. God Has Crowned Us With Glory and Honor

It's unfortunate so many have wrestled with low self-esteem. There could be many reasons individuals experience this ... including misguided Bible teaching. God wants us to see the high value He has bestowed upon us as His creation. Jesus paid the ultimate price for us and although we don't hear it preached very often, He has crowned us with glory and honor.

Think about it! We are identified as royalty—children of the King. Jesus said the glory God gave to Him would be given to us by Him. It's awesome and humbling. Learning to love yourself is by beginning to realize God's unlimited and never-changing love for you.

1066. Our Reward Is an Unearned Inheritance

There are people who show compassion and do good things to help others. Some are Christians, others are not. Some do it from a loving heart, others do it to try to earn points with God or to be seen by others for recognition.

When abiding in grace, what is the motivation to give to others who may be in need of help? Is it based on duty and obligation? Trying to avoid guilt? Feeling required to do so? Fear of 'the principle' of sowing and reaping? Banking some sort of eternal rewards? Or does it stem from a heartfelt desire to freely do so, rooted in the love that we have received from God?

An inheritance is something gifted by one who dies. As children of God, this is what has been given to us through Christ. It's not something we earn. It is not something that will fade away based on what we do or don't do. If the inheritance is based on works, it is no longer based on a promise. (See the context around Galatians 3:18).

1038. A Case of Stolen Identity

Our former days from working in radio brings a reminder of something the FCC required at the top of every hour for broadcasters. It's called a "Legal ID," where each station airs their call letters and city of license.

From a Christian spiritual perspective, what would appear on your ID if it were printed out ... similar to a driver’s license or other form of identification? How do you see yourself inwardly? How are you described?

If your identity is based upon what you do, that might fall under the category of a "legalistic ID." Requirements and demands that need to be met in order to become something you think you have not yet attained are just examples of stolen identity that empty religion has tricked us into giving away out of ignorance.

On the other hand, one of the greatest discoveries found in the gospel of grace is coming to realize how God already identifies us in the here and now. Righteous, perfected, blameless, sanctified, and so much more ... and it's not just how "He sees you" but it is who you are as a child who has inherited without trying to do anything to make it happen. We can now live from this "God life" that abides within as God produces it through us.

1031. "This Is Only a Test"

Have you been told that God will not provide blessings to you until you pass a test ... or a series of tests throughout your life? Imagine being in a state of mind that constantly has people wondering if God is withholding blessings as they try to figure out how to make themselves worthy.

It's another one of those foggy notions religion likes to throw out there which leaves believers in Christ longing for more of what they think they do not have (and that they need to earn). Like the gift of salvation, it's not about your accomplishments but rather the gospel testifies of God's divine triumph for us who have received an inheritance.

1003. Heirs Identified by Faith, Not Doers Seeking Recompense

Hollow religion tends to focus more on our actions—good or bad—instead of the work of Jesus and the blood He shed. Even the most passionate of grace people may end up sliding down a slippery slope of diet legalism if they take their eyes off of the prize ... while contradicting themselves about the gospel and the New Covenant, established and guaranteed by God. It often occurs through a misinterpretation of a few Bible verses ... combined with not understanding their identity as a child gifted with an inheritance. You are not defined by whatever label someone else wants to put on you, especially as it relates to good or bad actions.

Under the Old Covenant, Jews pursued a specific ministry of works through a holy and righteous law, thinking it would help them to lay hold of an elusive righteousness they could never attain. It was a very specific bundle, spelled out in writing through a package of 613 commands. All they needed was to do it. But all fell short and it left them in a place of sin consciousness—wondering what else they needed to do to inherit the kingdom.

In our religious culture today, the church corporation may neglect specifics when it comes to works and deeds which they think are the deciding factor as it relates to faith being dead or alive. That is where the law-minded person will come from. Neglecting to supply a precise list of do's and don'ts is a big piece to leave out of the puzzle. Fortunately, the gospel is far better than this.

878. You Don’t Work for an Inheritance (It’s Gifted)

Once Jesus came and fulfilled the law, faith was established. It would result in an inheritance. This is not something where you can earn favor by something you do, but an inheritance is something gifted when someone dies. Our inheritance is according to a promise that God made many years ago—and was ratified after the death of Jesus.

In Galatians, Paul contrasts the inheritance factor with the struggle of trying to attain eternal life through the works of the law. Hebrews 9 explains a will does not go into effect until the death of the one who made it. Jesus died and “willed” for us to become heirs according to the promise. The Greek word for “will” is often translated as testament or covenant in English Bibles. So it’s really by grace as a child of God that we freely receive the good things given by God.

710. Born Identity: We Are Heirs

An inheritance is not received by one’s commitment. It is not something that has been earned by working for it. It’s gifted. It’s not based upon law, but upon promise.

In order for a will (or covenant) to take effect, there has to be the death of the one who made it. Jesus died in order for us to receive an eternal inheritance, with an unbreakable seal - the Holy Spirit of promise.

709. Born Identity: You Are a Saint

The world tends to view saints as people who are rewarded for good behavior. That’s not how God sees it.

While most believers in Christ are being told in no uncertain terms - week after week - that they are nothing but dirty, rotten sinners, we find God identifying you as something quite the opposite… holy. It’s part of the inheritance you have received.

654. Sharing the Gospel with Others (Part 2)

Following up on last week’s program, we discuss some thoughts about effective ways to communicate the simple gospel message. It may be with someone who has never claimed to be a believer, or it may be someone from your church who has been bound by external religion. The message of God’s grace and unconditional love has changed how we communicate the good news. Many times, well-meaning Christians will tell people the gift of eternal life is free, but after the gift is received, a list of “Christian stuff” is handed to them, telling them all the things they need to do from now on (or the things to avoid). We’ve learned through our growth in grace that a better approach will be to let believers know who they (already) are now in Christ so they can grasp the new identity they have inherited. In Him they have become partakers of the divine nature and are considered holy, righteous, forgiven, sanctified, and much more.

529. Jesus Died; We Inherited

We have been gifted with an inheritance that could not be earned. This inheritance is "imperishable, undefiled and unfading." Inheritance is based upon the will and desire of the giver and it goes into effect after their death. So it is with our inheritance which was given through the new covenant of Jesus Christ:

"For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it. For a covenant is valid only when men are dead, for it is never in force while the one who made it lives." (Hebrews 9:15-17)

385. The Riches of Our Inheritance

We take a look at some of the qualities that we've already inherited. Having been born of the Father and brought into union with Jesus Christ has given us all things that pertain to life and Godliness. It's not something we strive to attain but through our inheritance we benefit from the work that God did through Christ. This inheritance means so much more than simply having our sins forgiven!

384. Your Inheritance Has Already Been Given

We have been given an inheritance from God through Jesus Christ. It's easy to think of it from the perspective that we will actually receive it when we die. But inheritance comes when the testator dies, not the recipient. His will and testament legally goes to whom He designates. His will for you has been revealed and the inheritance belongs to you in the here and now.

202. Identity - How Did I Become Who I Am?

Download/Play MP3 (6.4MB)
(Click to Play, Right-Click to Download, or use Player below)

The Bible has a lot to say about the new life that Christians have. Various passages talk about our new identity in Christ. How did we gain this new identity? How did we become who we are? Was it by works? Or was it simply by birth? Are we trying to become something through our behavior, or are we already who we are on the basis of having inherited a new nature and identity, apart from anything we've ever done or will ever do? We'll discuss these questions and more this week on Growing in Grace.
