460. Establish the Law?

Those entrapped with a legalistic mindset have been known to proclaim that we are supposed to be trying to "establish the law," referring to the Mosaic commandments. They attempt to make the case for this by referring to a verse in Chapter 3 of Romans. But what did the Apostle Paul say before this verse and just as importantly, what was said after it? The way we establish the law is not to live by it, but to proclaim the promise of righteousness by faith apart from works. So we don't nullify the law by proclaiming the promise, but the promise is nullified by trying to keep the law.

459. Fallen From Grace (Into What?)

The term "fallen from grace" usually triggers the thought process of someone that has gone from living a life of righteousness and purity and falling into some sort of terrible sin. Paul uses the phrase fallen from grace when writing to the Gentile believers in the book of Galatians. What is he scolding them about? What is it that they have "fallen" into that Paul said they should avoid? It's not the act of sinning, but something that many Christians have pursued who thought it would help them, when it actually did the opposite.

458. Multiple Choice: Grace or Law

The Jewish people had a relationship to the Law of Moses prior to the New Covenant being established. We who are Gentiles had never been under that law. Yet even in the early church there were Jewish believers in Christ who felt they were still meant to keep the law and to have Gentiles do the same. Paul and others were making the case to the church in Jerusalem that this is a burden that should no longer be carried. Why? That's our discussion this week.

457. What Must We Do?

Is grace through faith enough? Is there something we need to add to it, and specifically what is it? People like to feel they are contributing something to the cause and can appear to be offended when it is suggested that what Jesus did was completely sufficient. So let's have a conversation about our role in regards to the Christian life.

456. Already Sanctified

Confusion between the two covenants has led to confusion on other popular topics of Bible discussion. Misunderstandings about the ministry of Jesus, repentance and sanctification have caused people to be drawn into Old Covenant practices, which places them back under various types of legalism. It's important that we realize we have been gifted with sanctification (set apart) through the work of Christ at the cross and not through our self effort.
