559. Why Jesus Taught Two Covenants (Part 16): I Will Give You Rest

In recent programs during our series, we've looked at some of the seemingly harsh and heavy teachings Jesus ministered to the people of Israel. You may have noticed how Jesus would often seem rather hard and demanding while at other times He would minister with grace and compassion. Did He have a split personality? Was He contradicting Himself? Of course we know this is not the case, so what did it all mean? It has to do with which covenant was being communicated. When Jesus told people that His yoke was easy and His burden was light, He was opening the door for them to enter into the rest offered by a New Covenant that would soon be available to them.

537. Resting in the Finished Work

For those who do not understand that Jesus would minister two completely different covenants, it can seem as though He had a split personality. At times He taught the Jews requirements based on a law of works and at other times He demonstrated grace, mercy and compassion. These were often significant contrasts. People were ministered the choice of working endlessly in a system that offered no solution...Or realizing they were burdened and heavy laden and could come to Jesus in order to find rest. The latter is what Jesus wanted them to learn from Him. Whereas the law was a yoke that the Jewish people were unable to bear, Jesus' yoke is easy and His burden is light.

451. Life, Love and Liberty

We focus on the love of God this week, and the life that we have in Him. It freely brought mercy and righteousness apart from anything we could do to try to establish ourselves before God. Where the commands of the law ministered guilt and and put our weaknesses on display, grace delivered us from that. We'll look at a couple of instances that contrast Jesus ministering law while at other times reaching out with with mercy and compassion to those in need.

434. Caught in the Act: Mercy Vs. Law

We take a closer look into the story of the woman caught in the act of adultery. When the accusers pointed to the Mosaic law to demand justice, Jesus showed them that the law with which they tried to condemn her also did the same to them. The law had brought condemnation and death to the Jewish people for centuries. Yet with no attempt on her part, this woman was able to experience a taste of mercy from her Creator that would soon be the norm as the New Covenant was established.

428. Attitude Under Grace: Always Proclaiming God's Goodness

"God is good!" A phrase that gets thrown around a lot in Christian religious circles. Yet it shouldn't become just a catch-phrase for us. As we grow in grace and our understanding of the good news it becomes more of a reality that we can't be swayed from. Although we may not always understand why things happen the way they do, coming to the realization of the truth that God really is good (all the time) is a key component in regards to our attitude under grace.
