624. Christian Hypocrisy: Keeping Portions of the Law; Throwing Out the Rest

Chances are pretty good that your church denomination believes the “moral commands” found within the law of the Old Testament are meant to be considered a part of the Christian life. They will also declare other parts of the law have expired and do not apply today… such as animal sacrifices, various ceremonial laws, dietary laws, etc. The inconsistencies become very obvious when the old and new covenants are mixed together like this because the entire point of the entire law—all of it—was that nobody could live up to its perfect standard. Personal or moral improvement is a wonderful thing, but “trying your best” to follow a list of impossible commands will not improve your position with God. This is why all of the law was made to be abolished and obsolete… It’s all based upon God doing what the law could not do. Jesus fulfilled the law on our behalf and took the old law out of the way, freeing us from any and all condemnation.

We continue our discussion from last week as to whether the law was abolished. Has the Mosaic law died and has it been completely destroyed, or does it still live to serve a purpose? Over the years we've spent a lot of time talking about how we as believers have no relationship to the law, but this podcast (and part 1) is a bit different because we consider two different perspectives.

461. Law Abolished? (Two Viewpoints)

Was the Mosaic law really destroyed and abolished? The most important thing for us to realize is that we are dead to the law and that it has no place in the life of a righteous believer in Christ. But this week we approach the subject of whether the law was abolished or whether it is something else that was killed. Since Kap and Breeze are looking at this from different perspectives, will a referee be needed?

391. Jesus Taught the Law to Show How Impossible It Is

Jesus said He didn't come to abolish the Law and the Prophets, but to fulfill them. And this is exactly what He did. He taught the law. He directed the people who were under the law (the Jews) to follow the law. His law ministry was directed to people who were under the law. Why did He do this? Jesus was showing those who thought they were following the law that they really fell far short of it.

If you're going to try to justify yourself before God by attempting to follow the standards of His laws, Jesus will show you, as He did various people whom He came across, just how lofty a standard the law really is! We can then either go away sad (like the rich young ruler did) or we can come to the realization that since it's such an unattainable standard, what we really need is the gift of God's righteousness, apart from any of our own attempts at living up to God's lawful standards.

The gospel is not about us establishing righteousness through what we do. But rather it's about God establishing it for us. This is what Jesus attempted to reveal as He spoke to these people prior to the New Covenant.
