362. Tithing TENsion #4: How Can the Church Survive Without the Tithe?

Religious institutions have taken a Mosaic law known as tithing completely out of context and taught it as a new covenant principle when it comes to giving. So, how do churches and ministries get started, grow and continue to provide ministry if the practice of tithing your income isn't being taught?

We now have the Holy Spirit living within us to teach, lead and guide us. Each person can determine within their own heart what they give and how much, not because they are required to but because they are cheerfully willing to do so. But it's not about giving to build modern day mega-ministries; it's about sharing with each other and helping one another. Ministry under the new covenant is about building people, not building ministries.

361. Tithing TENsion #3: The New Covenant Priesthood

Under the old covenant, the tithe (a tenth) of the crops and animals were shared with the priests from the tribe known as the Levites. Under the New Covenant, the priesthood no longer exists. The Old has been replaced with a New Covenant and in Christ we have all become priests. Being completely free from the law has brought us something new and better. The tithe had a purpose under the old covenant – to feed the priestly tribe.

The early church was not instructed to tithe. So how did they respond when it came to giving? They didn't inherit lands or tithes as the Jewish tribes but rather a new identity of righteousness which included a heart that actually desired to give.

360. Tithing TENsion #2: The Windows of Heaven

When tithing is talked about in church, chances are you'll hear Malachi chapter 3. Yet there are many pages of scriptures in the Old Testament that lead up to Malachi. You'll hear about the windows of heaven being opened to everyone who tithes to the church today. But in the context of the Israelites tithing a tenth of their food to the Levite tribe, we discover what God really meant by "opening the windows of heaven."

Also this week, some say that since Abraham tithed before the law, and we today are not under the law, then we should tithe. But what was Abraham's tithe? Can it really be compared with or applied to the concept of giving our income to a church?

359. Tithing TENsion #1: The Tithe Was About Food (Not Money)

Few subjects have been more misunderstood that than the tithe. Tithing was something established with the Israelites under the Mosaic Law. It has been one of those old covenant laws that religion has carried over to the new covenant but completely twisted into something entirely different.

The tithe was never about giving a tenth of all your income, it was setup for 11 of the Israeli tribes to tithe food for the 12th tribe – the tribe of the Levites (priests) – who had not been given the inheritance of land. The "storehouse" is not a bank or a church. It was a place to store food. This begins a 4-part series.

358. Covenant Confusion Conclusion: Contrasting the Old Vs. the New

In our 8th and final podcast in the Covenant Confusion series we summarize a list of bullet points of the many differences between the Old Covenant with its burdensome demands compared to the New Covenant of Love and faith. Notice the contrasts and realize the New Covenant is not an amendment to the Old nor were they meant to be mixed together. The Old was completely wiped out and replaced with something much better. The differences between the covenants are vast and we should avoid confusing the Old Covenant law with what Christ did for us through His finished work.
