351. Covenant Confusion #1: 1st Covenant Has No Place in the Christian Life

It has caused more churches and believers to miss the mark as much as anything: Not understanding the difference between the Old Covenant and the New. Indeed the 1st covenant had a purpose, yet confusion and misunderstandings prevail due to a combination of the old and new being taught as if they belong together. The old covenant (law) was never God's will. This will be the first podcast in a sequence of many where we examine the good news of the new covenant and why the old covenant has no place in the lives of believers today.

  1. I love your podcasts guys!!! I am a stay at home mom in Regina, Saskatchewan Canada. I downloaded about 60 of your podcasts onto my Ipad so I could take them along on our camping trip. I listen to them every night instead of my usual reading. I have listened to other peoples messages about grace and the exchanged life etc. and have been turned off by them because of the tone of judgmentalism toward the church and everything it teaches and the way it functions now. Do I think that they are correct in alot of what they are saying? Yes! but I also believe that God is so big and so able to work through the church the way it is, through any demonination and through even doctrinally incorrect teachings. Praise God! I appreciate what I have heard from you so far in that you speak the truth but don't bash others in the process. You speak with truch and grace :-) Thanks. I also really love what you said at the end of this podcast I just listened to 350, about pointing out contrasts. I believe that true understanding can only come by understanding the contrast of something. eg. If all you've ever known is bondage, then what is freedom to you. If all you've ever experienced is an abusive, unloving home, then how would you know what love is. And also, how would we understand what grace really is unless we understood it in comparison to the law.

    1. You said,
how would we understand what grace really is unless we understood it in comparison to the law.

tHIS IS WHY THE LAW WAS PUT IN PLACE TO SHOW US OUR NEED FOR GOD. THE LAW WAS A SCHOOL MASTER UNTIL BELIEF CAME
THE LAW IS STILL A SCHOOL MASTER TO THE UNBELIEVER. THIS IS THE ONLY REASON THE LAW WOULD STILL BE IN PLACE IS FOR THE UNBELIEVER. cHRIST WAITING FOR THE ENEMY OT BE PUT UNDER HIS FEET ONE PERSON AT A TIME AS THEY LEAVE THE SCHOOL MASTER TO THE MASTER CHRIST JESUS UNTO GOD THE FATHER OF

  2. I’ve recently discovered that I have the spiritual gift of heresy. My first goal as a heretic is to shorten the Bible because it has way too many chapters. Your podcast mentions covenant confusion, and the anonymous dude who wrote Hebrews (especially chapter 8) mentioned that the old covenant was obsolete. If that’s true, why should I want to spend much time reading an obsolete contract (i.e. OT) even though it is the source of a lot of sermons and p&w lyrics?

Also @anonymous: I see a vision of a beast in green and white arising out of the prairie abyss. Then I see a vision of the called out ones (in much nicer looking robes of course) stomping on this green and white beast on that great and terrible day of the banjo bowl.

  3. Jim, as usual it sounds like it's pretty windy where you are :-)
Perhaps if you would actually take the time to listen to this series of podcasts, you might better understand the points we're trying to make between the obsolete Old Covenant and the everlasting New Covenant.

You can actually learn quite a bit about this NC we're under by comparing it to the old (which is what Mr. Anonymous did throughout much of the book of Hebrews). It can help people to understand why Jesus did what He did and why His work is a completed one.

However, our main purpose in this series is to point out the fact that the OC was abolished. We attempt to help people see they no longer have to live in religious bondage by continuing to apply certain aspects of the 1st covenant into their lives when it has been replaced by Jesus Christ with a new & better option.

  4. I have found first and foremost one has to be seeking life in order to find life. And whoever is seeking shall find it. Those that want to know the creator of all will find the creator of all for the creator of all will reveal truth to the one that truly seeks. There are a lot of talkers out of the sides of their mouths, and hearts are only out for mischief. I am sorry about those that are missing out on such a life of world despair, being poor, desolate, and or rich with money, but regardless of what they are here, the one that is content no matter what condition they are in here on earth are the ones that are full of Joy in the Holy Ghost. Look at history with the rich men of old, investigate where they happy, full of joy behind the scenes? No I see not. Here is the test, can you go through life without? What will you do? how far will you go to get food? Will you steal, kill and destroy as many do today? God is real and people just use whatever to survive until they come to belief
Any way, thanks for the spiritual heresy Jim for getting me to stop and think, for me all things work together for God's good somehow some way
    Love ya! Howard

  7. Vicky, I'm more of a heretic so take what follows with a grain of salt, but I think Paul indicates that New Covenant giving is more about the heart and not the amount. The only specific tithing lines I remember in the NT were related to the Pharisees, but I don't recall any specific places in the NT that state directly 'tithing is a spiritual law". There are indications that Holy Spirit people are generous with their time/resources when they see a need. The specific "God robber" idea is from Malachi which is OT-school. If someone out there knows of this specific line in the NT, I'd also like to know where it is.

But if you still want to send "seed money", you can send it to me (in unmarked bills) at GRQ (Get Rich Quick) Inc. I'll give you a tax receipt if you can catch me somewhere in the Caribbean (the guy sipping rum cocktails at the beach).

  8. 2 Corithians chapters 9 explains present day giving and it is not 10% it is out of one heart to give and to give what you have not what you do not have out of compassion , never compulsion, read all the chapters 8,and 10 on giving and you will see no one in the new covenant is under tithing. Tithing was the law and we in a new covenat are not under law, we are under grace
If one has to tithe, then there is no grace, no heart in the matter. Howard
