490. The Sermon: Why Jesus Taught the Law

The Jews pursued their own attempt at the law of righteousness, but were unable to attain it because they did not pursue it by faith. The Mosaic Law that was given to Israel had a purpose – it was to demonstrate their inability to keep it. During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is having an Old Covenant conversation with the people of Israel and showing them what the law was intended to do ever since it was agreed upon. It was meant to bring guilt, hopelessness and despair, and it was all by design.
