357. Covenant Confusion #7: The Commandments Fulfilled & Abolished

Jesus stated that He came not to destroy the law and the prophets but to fulfill them. Yet after His death the apostle Paul declared that the law and commandments had been the ministry of death and condemnation and are now abolished (replaced with a new and better covenant). Through His life and then His death at the cross Jesus did fulfill the law (and also the prophets) on our behalf. We take a look at the marriage relationship we have with the Lord and why having any kind of relationship to the old covenant law can be compared to spiritual adultery.

356. Covenant Confusion #6: The Red Letters...Old Covenant or New?

The "red letter gospel" is a phrase used in reference to the words of Jesus which are printed in red letters in many Bibles. Although the life of Jesus appears in the New Testament, Jesus was born under the law and would often minister the law to those who were under it. This was the purpose of the law, it was a tutor that taught it was impossible to meet the requirement of righteousness by trying to keep Old Covenant commandments.

In order for a will and testament (covenant) to take effect, the testator had to die. Therefore, it was after the death of Jesus that the 1st (temporary) covenant was replaced with a new and everlasting one. As we rightly divide the covenants, keep in mind not everything Jesus said was for you personally because He was ministering to people under a covenant that is now obsolete.

355. Covenant Confusion #5: Recognizing the Old from the New

We take a look at some examples of how believers have taken old covenant ideology and wrongly blended it into our new covenant lives. Often in the church world we see things that have been symbolically integrated that are copies and shadows from the former covenant and may bring a mindset of failure, fear and misunderstanding when it comes to our Christian life. And what about some of the writings of the Old Testament? Are we supposed to live by everything that was written or is it there to point us to a better way?

354. Covenant Confusion #4: Comparing Counterfeit Copies to Christ

The entire old covenant that the Jewish people were under was built on a foundation of imitation. The 1st covenant with its commandments and repeated sacrifices according to the law were just copies and shadows of the real deal. It was only symbolic and was not able to bring true remission (forgiveness) nor did it bring the removal of sins.

Jesus came to take away the 1st covenant altogether in order to establish the 2nd. We should not be trying to figure out how to apply old covenant copies and shadows (fakes) into our new lives in Christ. We now have the original.
